Playa Santiago

The fishing village Playa Santiago, in the delta of many beautiful ravines, lies in the sunny south of La Gomera. In the area where fish used to be processed, independent tourists can enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the town.

Comfortable holiday parks with amazing views, have been built on the bordering plateau.

The Lively Plaza del Carmen

The centre of this harbour settlement is the lively Plaza del Carmen. A little promenade begins here, at this favourite meeting place of the locals, and stretches along the harbour.

Besides typical Canarian cuisine, bars and restaurants offer a good location to watch the waters.

The sunny Port of Playa Santiago

Further to the east, houses of the idyllic district Laguna stand on the hillsides, surrounded by the banana plantations of the valley.

Quiet apartments, from private landlords, can be found here, as well as in the neighbouring playa. The old settlement Tecina stretches out above the town, along the mountain ridge. A luxury hotel stands at it’s cliff-edge.

A hotel complex was built here in 1987, under the leadership of the Norwegian family Olson.

Against the backdrop of a somewhat barren landscape, the hotel seems quite unreal.

Family Olsen in Playa Santiago

The Scandinavian family bought the land and water rights in the 20th century, thanks to entrepreneurial finesse.

Starting with tomato and banana farming, the ship-owner then turned his attention to fish processing and later to tourism, ferries and luxury hotels, including a golf course. Today Fred Olson F.A. is the biggest employer on the island.

The Airport of La Gomera

Even though a small airport was built near Playa Santiago, the place has remained very peaceful. A few small aircraft take-off regularly from the airport for inter-Canarian transport.

So far, nothing can be felt of the large tourist influx.

Playa de Santiago

The coarse gravel beach along the harbour promenade, is protected from the surf by a jetty. Swimmers can safely jump into the waves from here.

A small area of the beach has been filled with sand. However, the remote bathing inlet in the south, accessible only by small paths, is far more attractive.

Playa del Medio

Playa Santiago is about an hour’s walk away from the lovely Playa del Medio. The protected bay with it’s gentle surf is popular with nudists. Between the rocks you can find the perfect spot to relax and sunbathe.
