atlantic-care
The atlantic-care project has given itself the task of protecting whales and dolphins and educating people about these wonderful creatures. The project’s headquarters can be found in Valle Gran Rey.
Atlantic-care is a private whale and dolphin protection project which aims to inform people about the different species around the Canary island La Gomera.
Appearance and behaviour of these mammals
We have been collecting data about the appearance and behaviour of the different dolphin and whale species since 1994. Counts, behavioural descriptions and specific individual identifications (photo-ID) make up part of our scientific work.
Because La Gomera is a tourist island, where more and more is being done for tourism, but not for the environment, it is important for us to educate people.
Slideshows and informative events
Slideshows and other informative events are held regularly. Furthermore, we are working with other organisations, in particular the Sociedad Espanola de Cetaceos, the Spanish whale and dolphin protection association.
Whale and dolphin species in detail
The Canary Islands are a very special area for whales and dolphins. So far, we have been able to identify 21 species to the south-west of La Gomera. Some live here, others come and go depending on the season. mehr
