Casa de los Helechos
La Casa de Los Helechos, the House of the Ferns, is located in one of the best preserved environments in La Gomera, the village of Agulo, in the North of the island.
The Manor House was built in the mid 1800's. It has been restored with noble woods in the finest Canarian style.
It originally belonged to the Mendoza family, related to the reknowed painter Jose Aguiar, whose house may be spotted from Los Helechos' tower.
Later on, the house passed ofer the Ascanio family by marriage. This family, of fine lineage on the island, also owned various pieces of surrounding land.
For more than 30 years, the prestigious painter Inocencio Rodriguez Guanche live in the house, his watercolours still decorate Los Helechos rooms. Today, the house is managed by a direct descendant of its first owners.
La Casa de los Helechos is located at the end of the village, between mountains and the sea, where the paths lead to the coast and the nearby forests are born.
You may explore the Garajonay National Park, declared Humanity Heritage by Unesco. There you may visit "El Cedro" Forest, with samples of giants ferns and other tree species that date from the Terciary Era.
